For those of you who wish to explore some of the abiding currents of early Modernism in art, this site is indispensible. Named after the notorious protagonist of Ubu Roi by Alfred Jarry, this play caused a scandal among the more staid memebers of Parisian society upon its performance in 1896. With its opening cry of "Merdre" ("Shittr") the tone was set for the maximum provocation of outrage.
